The series is set in the time before World War II in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The series follows Neda, a girl who tragically lost her parents at a very young age. Alone in the world, she begins her struggle for a place in society and life, trying to understand what her mother once did and why she has to suffer for her "sin."
The temptations she faces and the obstacles she must overcome will make Neda capable of confronting the world she lives in in the right way, finding her place in it, and earning happiness.
At the beginning of the series, we meet a young student from Sremski Karlovci, Ranka, who meets a young man named Svetislav at the Saint Sava ball. She falls in love with him, and after a year-long relationship, they get engaged. While on a spree in Karlovci, Ranka meets the handsome and wealthy banker Dušan, whom she soon marries. Svetislav can't get over his breakup with Ranko and tries to commit suicide. A few years later, Ranka and Svetislav meet again. She has a daughter, Neda, and is unhappy in her marriage, while Svetislav has never married and lives a secluded life on his estate. There, he will fall ill and die, leaving his nephew Bojan with an unusual legacy.
