The Russian Consul

The Russian Consul is a Serbian film from 2024, directed by Miroslav Lekić. The screenplay was written by Miroslav Lukić, Vladimir Tabašević, and Igor Bojović, based on the motifs of Vuk Drašković's novel of the same name. The film is set in the 1970s, which can be considered key moments in the Kosovo-Metohija crisis, which would define the future coexistence of Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija.

The main character is psychiatrist Ilija Jugović, who, after the death of a patient in Belgrade, is punished by the party and transferred to a hospital in Prizren, Kosovo, where he gets a job as a general practitioner. There, he meets history professor Ljubo Božović—the self-proclaimed Russian consul, who appears to be a psychiatric patient. Božović is opposed by local Albanian power brokers and hidden separatists, as well as members of the Communist Party and officials in positions of authority. The most powerful of them, Halit Berisha, is evicting Serbs from Kosovo through various brutal pressures, carrying out ethnic cleansing.

Next up is Ljubo Božović, whom Berisha is trying to evict from his house and drive out of Kosovo. The Russian consul refuses to sell the house and clashes with Berisha, and Dr. Ilija Jugović also comes to his defense.
