At the center of the story is Vladan Simonović, hated in Serbia for the wealth he acquired during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. If he was previously able to run his company from the shadows, and to some extent the entire country's economy, the politicians in power now, when necessary, put him on a kind of pillory, using him to strengthen their political authority.
At the same time, the same politicians are collaborating with Simonović's competition and planning to turn themselves or people from their closest circle into a new class of tycoons who are unconditionally loyal to them, with a seemingly clean past. Therefore, the attempted assassination of Simonović will not make him a victim in the eyes of politicians and the media under their control.
That attack will only make him even more isolated and vulnerable, so he'll have to lead the assassination investigation himself. He is a haunted man forced to take drastic measures to preserve himself and his company. Besides public and secret enemies, he is also in conflict with his son, as well as the rest of his family, which is actually held together by his wealth.
